[Labor Accident Case] Carbon monoxide poisoning during the cleaning of the adsorption tower of a desulfurization unit at a steelworks.

We will introduce a case of carbon monoxide poisoning that occurred during the cleaning of the adsorption tower of a desulfurization device at a steel mill.

During the cleaning of the lower section of the desulfurization unit, the victim and two colleagues were using a vacuum hose to perform suction work outside the inner manhole, while four others were inside the inner manhole. The observer at the steel mill sensed an unpleasant odor and, concerned about the inflow of exhaust gas from the sintering machine, measured the levels of sulfur dioxide, oxygen concentration, and carbon monoxide concentration inside the manhole. The oxygen concentration was 18.8% and the carbon monoxide concentration was 130 ppm, prompting the observer to instruct the workers inside the manhole to "run away." After receiving medical attention, both the observer and the victim were advised to be hospitalized; however, the observer returned home the same day, while the victim was hospitalized for a week due to carbon monoxide poisoning. [Suggestions] - Workers should wear portable gas monitors while working. - This will enable early detection of gas leaks in the furnace and alert workers and those nearby to potential dangers. *For more details, please refer to the PDF document or feel free to contact us.*

[Labor Accident Case] Leaked refrigerant ammonia flowed in, causing ammonia poisoning.

A case of ammonia poisoning occurred when refrigerant ammonia leaked from a refrigeration unit and flowed into a meat processing plant.

Due to a malfunction of the electromagnetic valve in the cooling system of the meat processing plant, the compressor in the refrigeration unit was damaged, causing ammonia gas to flow and spread within the factory. After ventilating and evacuating the ammonia gas, work commenced, but due to insufficient removal of the ammonia gas, secondary damage occurred in the form of ammonia poisoning. Additionally, a maintenance worker who came into contact with a low-temperature object while closing the valve of the refrigeration unit suffered frostbite on their toes. 【Suggestions】 ■ By using gas detectors during regular patrol inspections, it is effective for confirming the safety of workers and for the early detection of ammonia gas leaks. *For more details, please refer to the PDF document or feel free to contact us.

[Labor Accident Case] Organic Solvent Poisoning during Painting Repair Work at a Hydroelectric Power Plant

We will introduce a case where organic solvent poisoning occurred during the painting and repair work at a hydroelectric power station.

During regular maintenance, the internal painting of the draft was carried out, but due to areas left unpainted and poor painting quality, the workers entered the draft to perform finishing touches. One of the two workers inside the draft sat down, and the other became unable to move, so they were taken to the hospital. Following examinations, both were diagnosed with poisoning from organic solvents. [Suggestions] - Use gas detectors to confirm the effectiveness of ventilation. - Work while ensuring safety with a portable gas monitor. *For more details, please refer to the PDF document or feel free to contact us.*
